The Music Piracy Myth

from the starting-to-get-through? dept

Found over on Dave Farber's IP list, is this great rant from a musician talking about why the RIAA is misleading with their claims that mp3s are hurting their business - and wondering why Congress seems to accept them at their word. He also makes the point that many people are trying to make, which is that mp3s are promotional items. He says they're promotional items for his CDs, but I think the music industry can go even further - and realize that any content that can be copied and distributed for free needs to be embraced as the most useful promotional material out there. They just need to figure out what they're promoting. So far, they're too shortsighted to see beyond their plastic discs.

the music industry is totally ripping us off! They already have enough money. The extra five or six bucks you spend on CDs goes straight into the recording label's pockets.
