Taking A Mobile Phone Audio Tour

It appears that mobile phone based "walking audio tours" are becoming much more popular. While the idea of the "audio tour" has been popular in museums and some tourist attractions for years, people recently have figured out that, thanks to the mobile phone, this concept can be used anywhere. The New York Times is talking about just such a walking tour of Manhattan's Lower East Side, describing that area's rich history. You can download a map, and then listen to the tour by calling a 1-800 number (of course, you can also just listen to the tour without walking the streets, but that's not quite the same experience). Now, what would be cool was if someone set up a simple way to create these sorts of tours - so that anyone could offer their own "tour" of various locations. Maybe we need to look into "Techdirt's Mobile Audio Tour of Silicon Valley", which I'm sure would be eagerly awaited by, well... not too many people.

There is so much scope for a little innovation giving great results here. Once some kind of easily discovered location code is available, sending a quick request and receiving informaton via MMS would be SO sweet. The follow-on of visiting a WAP/XHTML site to leave *your* comments for others to view would not take a genius to knock together, either. Damn, another idea I should implement! ;-)
