Libya Is Gone From The Internet

from the just-like-that dept

The Register is reporting that all Libyan domain names have disappeared from the internet, in what looks to be some sort of dispute between the company that manages the .ly domain and IANA, the organization that is just supposed to handle technical aspects of domain allocation. The article suggests that ICANN is using IANA to force groups that run certain top level domains to recognize ICANN's control over the internet. If this is the case, then it's certainly a misuse of their power. Either way, someone should be explaining why the entire set of .ly domains no longer exists.
