The Lycos File System?

from the leap-frog dept

In the last week or so there's been a lot of buzz about a hack that would let people use their 1 gig Gmail account as an online file storage system, called the Gmail Filesystem. Of course, this is a hack and one that Google is likely to shut down before too long. However, you have to wonder if it's just a coincidence that Lycos is now getting ready to announce what sounds like the Lycos file system. They had already announced plans to offer 1 gig for email -- though not for free, and the latest plans indicate that they'll let people use the space to store any kind of files they want. It's almost amusing to see the search engine/portal players back into the world that many predicted they would own years ago. Of course, the question is how quickly will Google and others respond?

The online drive is there in my account already; you get 10mb of space to upload music, images or files.

I don't know if it's being rolled out to everyone gradually, but I've had it since their email upgrade last month.
