How Apple Is Getting Publicity For Its Non-Sponsorship Of The Olympics

Quick! Someone call the the International Olympic Committee! Someone is getting publicity from the Olympics without paying for official sponsorship! We've covered the ridiculous extremes of the Olympic Committee in the past -- including banning anyone from wearing clothes that showed the brand of a sponsor's rival and having special rules about how anyone can mention the Olympics, lest anyone think a non-sponsor was officially associated with the event. However, the Baltimore Sun is reporting how Apple has received a ton of free publicity for the iPod, as a number of athletes (snowboarders, especially) have been seen listening to iPods while competing, with some even saying what they were listening to at the time. Considering the Olympic Committee once told athletes they weren't allowed to blog about their experiences, how long until they tell them they can't use iPods either... unless, of course, Apple pays up for a sponsorship slot?

so who sets forth these ludacris rules? is it NBC because they bought the rights to it? or is it the committie itself.
if it is the Olympic Group, what do they have to gain for this?

I'm pretty sure that a rap music artist isn't making any rules that are being enforced by the IOC.

Unless Apple ASKED the athletes to use their product, I can't see it being Apple's responsibility to pay. But then again, I'm no lawyer.

the olympic committee can ask them to do whatever they like while they're on television or under contract with them. NBC pays for the rights to host the olympics, but does not recieve the advertising revenue related to the in-program stuff. They only recieve revenue for their aired commercial advertisements.
It is wise for the olympic committee to close out nonpaying companies who are recieve advertisement value, since they would otherwise be discouraging that company and competitor companies from providing sponsorships. Sponsorships generally include free products for athletes, as well, which is not too shabby of a deal.

So who's the official condom sponsor this year? I understand the Olympic Village goes through a lot of those. Enough to rather embarrass Utah four years ago...

If reading Techdirt has taught me anything, it's that the people who enforce this silliness don't tend to know what the actual consequences are. One reason why Techdirt is so great is that they're pretty quick to point that out.

Many snowborders listen to ipods around here, I can safely say that not just snowborders, but many people. I live in the suburbs.

lol this is what I love about f0rums, people are so quick to jump the gun on others people everybody is just pissed offf. Letz forget about the issue itself and attack others, it makes me feel warm and cuddly inside. *shrugs*
I spelled it how I wanted to, maybe its my 1337 speak, maybe its a typo, maybe I suck at spelling, maybe new to the states or english, dosent really change the subject matter does it? but thanks for the responsz0r <
