Nokia Turns Phones Into Credit Cards

from the quick-pay dept

Not quite the mCommerce everyone was talking about a few years ago, but Nokia has made a deal with Mastercard to turn their phones into credit cards. Certain new phones will have the technology included. Older phones can buy replacement clip-on faceplates to add the technology. It's basically taking the "speedpass" or other "quick-payment" technologies and attaching it to a mobile phone, rather than a keychain dongle. These systems have been slowly spreading over the past few years. Of course, I'm still waiting for more merchants to start using systems that would let people pay by punching in a certain phone number, and just adding the total to the phone bill, but for some reason that's still slow to catch on.
