Big Power Outage In NYC And Other Northeast Cities

from the who-needs-power? dept

Not quite sure what's going on, but stories filtering in that New York City and a number of other northeast cities have all completely lost power. Airports have been shut down, people are stuck in elevators. Everyone below ground in NYC subways are stuck. Lots of general confusion at this point, and no one seems to know what's going on. More as info comes out. Update: CNN is reporting that it was due to a natural occurrence that happened at the Niagara Mohawk power grid, and cascaded over causing the massive shut down. It may take some time to get back going again. The videos coming out of NY showing mobs of people wandering through the streets (peacefully) are fascinating. Update 2 CNN now has the story on their website, which I imagine they'll keep updating as necessary.

Its affecting our call centers in PA for the Stock Market ... not the Outage ... but the sheer volume of calls coming in from our main office in New York ... all reporting their systems are down ...

I seem to recall a few years ago, when the power went out for a few minutes in parts of CA, so the world panicked, and the rest of the USA celebrated "California going down in flames".

When I lived back East, summer power outages that would last for hours or even days because of thunderstorms or overloaded grids were routine; yet, they rarely made it beyond local news.
