Online Betting Patterns Reveal Tennis Match Fixing

from the an-awful-lot-of-money-for-a-nobody dept

Sports players purposely losing games in exchange for betting money is nothing new at all. However, patterns in internet betting may make it easier to catch those involved. Authorities are now investigating a number of tennis players accused of throwing matches after an online betting site noticed abnormally high numbers of bets on certain low-ranking players. One player has already been warned that he’s “being watched” and others are being investigated. Of course, if this were happening in the US, we’d have to rely on foreign online betting sites to open up their records to authorities, since online betting is still forbidden here.
