Treasury Department Breaks Privacy Promise Because It's Too Inconvenient

from the that's-a-problem dept

Generally speaking, if you make a promise to keep someone's information private, and then reveal it, you could get in a lot of trouble. That's apparently not the case if you're a government agency yourself, though. The Treasury Department recently asked for comments on a proposal, which would be posted on a website, but promised to keep personal information (street address, email addresses) private. However, when they received more than the expected number of comments, they simply changed the policy and decided to post the comments with full info. Apparently, they're telling the world that you only have to obey privacy promises if it's convenient.
