Political Spam And Pop-Ups

from the because-politics-isn't-annoying-enough-already dept

Because the latest political battles aren't annoying enough already, it looks like they're only set to get more intrusive. Political spam is nothing new - and we reported on a number of cases of political spam last year during the California governor's election. This year, of course, political spam is going Presidential. So far, it looks as though it's mostly focused on self-built "opt-in" lists, however, you have to wonder how long that will last. Most messages encourage people to send them on to lots of friends - so you should expect political spam from your more politically vocal friends. I'm sure it won't be long until some politically motivated spammer decides to forward his favorite political spam to all 50 million "friends" in his database. Meanwhile, Slashdot is reporting that the Republican National Committee has been experimenting with pop-up ads, because nothing convinces voters like bugging them as they're trying to do something else. Of course, if you're not a fan of the Republicans, you might want to encourage them to keep this up, since studies have found that pop-ups are bad for business.
