Want Fries With That Outsourcing?

from the what-can't-you-outsource? dept

theodp writes "The NY Times reports that even restaurant jobs are not immune to outsourcing. Pull into the drive-through of a McDonald's just off U.S. 55 near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the person taking your order is more than 900 miles away in a Colorado Springs call center. A McDonald's IT VP says it is 'way, way too early' to tell if the call center idea would work across the chain's 13,000 U.S. restaurants." The claim is that by centralizing this service, it reduces the error rates and gets people through the drive-through faster -- though, it's not entirely clear why that's true.

How many fast-food workers in California speak good English? About 10% of them?

I've gone to a McDonald's drive-thru where they take your order in person and still had them fuck it up. How hard is it to ring up a Sausage McMuffin and coffee anyway?

Well, dorkwad, if you'd shut off your F-350 while you're mumbling into the microphone and slapping your kids in the back, then maybe we'd be able to hear you.

Fewer than 1 in 10 turn off their engine, and those that do aren't driving these larger trucks with the painfully-loud engines. I was amazed how much I could hear when the engine went off and the customer actually spoke AT the mic. No shouting, just speaking.

I don't own a F-350, butt-pirate. And I don't have kids and I don't mumble and I said I was talking FACE TO FACE TO A LIVE PERSON, NOT A MICROPHONE. Why don't you read the comments before you mindlessly and anonymously slander other people, dick.
