High Gas Prices Drive Online Shopping... Even If In-Store Pickup Is Better

from the choices,-choices dept

Last month, we noted that the huge jump in gas prices lately could help fuel more interest in telecommuting. However, it could also help boost other areas online as well. For instance, a new study shows that gas prices are causing more people to shop online, rather than go to the store. Of course, this is all based on a survey, so people may not be telling the truth. It's likely that lots of people think that shopping online to save gas is a good idea -- but whether or not they really do so is a different question. In fact, another study came out today (on the same site, too) saying most shoppers would prefer to buy online, but pickup at the local store if they could. So, maybe it's really just lower gas prices that they're shopping for online.

  • Stinkin' Gas Cans

I bought an emergency gas can just in case they start rationing gas, but the fumes from the can in the trunk were stinking up the car, despite getting the cap on as tight as possible, so I emptied it today.

Sounds risky -- the tax man might come after you for fraud, and the grade of gas may be low. They add paraffin, vegatable oil, and other nasty stuff to fuel in third world countries, if you've ever noticed the purple smoke coming out of tailpipes in those countries.

  • Having stuff shipped to you instead of going to pi

The notion that it is cheaper to buy something online, and having it shipped, is, well, silly. Now shopping is a different story. If you are looking around for a product that you want to buy, it wolud be more economical to do it online, then, if you can, pick up the item at the store, thus saving you the $5+ for S&H
