Google Pulling The Strings Backstage For The Opera Decision

from the oh,-look:-money dept

With Opera's announcement earlier this week that they were going to start just giving out the browser for free many started to wonder where their revenue was going to come from. Of course, Opera only got a small fraction of their revenue from selling the browser (their mobile licensing deals are a bigger part of the business), but it was still a good question. Thanks to Om Malik for hounding the folks at Opera and finally getting them to admit that they've signed a search referral deal with Google, similar to what Mozilla/Firefox has -- which has been enormously profitable for the no-longer-non-profit Mozilla.

    Go Opera! Go Google!

I say more power to them! I love having the Google search box embedded in the Opera toolbar. I also love that Opera is now free so more people can surf without fear of spyware and the general lameness known as IE.

    No Subject Given

Err, Opera has had the Google search for ages! It actually “invented” the (Google) search field which is now standard in Firefox and IE7.
