Google Waves Enthusiastically To Madison Avenue
from the yoooohooooooo dept
Last Thursday, we pointed to a NY Post story saying that Google was working to expanding their advertising sales effort into television. Apparently, the NY Post broke that story a little bit early. Both the NY Times (Google Wants to Dominate Madison Avenue, Too) and the Wall Street Journal (Google Weighs on Madison Avenue) published nearly identical stories about Google’s ambitions to change how all kinds of advertising is sold. These stories did not appear by accident. Seeing both the NY Times and the WSJ publish such similar pieces within hours of each other suggests pretty clearly that Google “gave” them this story — and that means Google is putting Madison Avenue on notice. It’s Google’s way of telling Madison Avenue that they’re serious about this, and seeing how the advertising industry reacts. So, for those who hadn’t yet realized that Google is an advertising company, it seems there’s not much excuse to claim ignorance any more.

No Subject Given
They’re an advertising company but they only deliver ads. They don’t actually create content of those ads, which is (I believe) what Madison Ave. ad companies do.
Re: No Subject Given
But it’s not like they can’t afford the talent if they decided to go this route.
Re: Re: Do you ever not trash Google?
Yes, Google makes revenue off of advertising. But they do have a superior search engine. Would you prefer that Google become a pay-by-the-month service? I’ve only been reading tech dirt for about 6 months but you seem to continually bash Google. Did you bash Microsoft to no end in the past too?
Re: Re: Re: Do you ever not trash Google?
I don’t see why this would be trashing google. It’s actually pretty nice of them to let them know they’re going to be invading their market. Give’s Madison Ave. time to prepare. Although like someone said, they actually create the ad themselves, not just distribution.
Re: Re: Re:2 Google offers advertising they offer the talent.
Google is expanding so fast right now with the G-mail and the new Beta features of Google. they have been doing some serious R&D and are now breaking it all to the world. Google is making it’s name known in every community. that makes them an advertising Giant. On-line you buy ad space from search engines.
Re: Re: Re:3 Google offers advertising, they offer the tale
I mean on top of all this wonderful publicity they get on your site. (I agree mostly bad at time) They do however have one of the strongest platforms on-line with the new scholar.google.com and the ability to translate entire pages in many of the large languages in the world. I looked it up they are actually trying to find the different dialects of Africa to translate even. This company is serious about their standing on the shoulders of Giants.

I guess I’m confused as to how this is trashing Google. It wasn’t intended to trash Google at all. I actually think it’s pretty pro-Google, showing how strong they’ve become as an advertising firm.
And, what’s extra amusing is that it was just a month ago that people accused us of never saying anything bad about Google at all.
So, which is it? Are we too nice to Google or too mean to Google?
As far as we’re concerned we call what we see, no more, no less.
Re: Re: Re: Do you ever not trash Google?
wtf?
Where did I bash Google? Hell, 99% of the time I’m defending it from “Ooh, it’s so big!” losers on Betanews.
You did *read* the comment, right?
Re: Re: Re:2 Do you ever not trash Google?
Hence I said time rather than times. If someone offered me a spot on their main page you couldn’t find me saying a bad thing about them. Especially one with as a big a name as Google. Tech Dirt… I like this column.
