Weak Spam Lawsuits Come To The UK

from the it's-about-time dept

While the UK put in place anti-spam laws before the US, those laws have been deemed horribly ineffective. As of earlier this year, not a single spammer had been punished. However, a UK businessman has now successfully sued a company for spamming him, though the damages were limited so he could bring the case in small claims court. The spamming company seemed so unconcerned by the matter that, while they acknowledged the suit, they didn't bother to defend themselves. In other words, this is unlikely to make other spammers in Europe all that concerned.

Nigel Roberts seems rather incautions about posting his email address, so I bet he gets a huge amount of spam.
He's a former politician and is on the Administration Committee of the Internet organisation ICANN so he's not your typical litigant.
This case was not defended - probably for reasons of cost.
