Adware Firm Drops Lawsuit Against Anti-Spyware Firm After Risk-Level Changed

from the real-story? dept

Last year we noted that adware provider 180Solutions (who has been accused of many sneaky install practices) was suing Zone Labs for calling their software "spyware." In many ways, this is a very similar legal issue to spammers suing blackhole list operators for calling their email spam. However, now 180Solutions has dropped the case against Zone Labs, claiming that since Zone Labs has downgraded the risk designation of their software. Zone Labs put out a press release denying this was any kind of "settlement" between it and 180Solutions. There's a good chance that 180Solutions realized there was little chance they would win this lawsuit, and saw the downgrade as an opportunity to drop out of the case. What's not clear, though, is why Zone Labs changed the risk rating on the software.

  • Zonelabs changed wording BEFORE the lawsuit

Zonelabs is very clear that they were sued AFTER they showed wording changes to the suing company.
This is a simple, clear win for Zonelabs.
