What Do Sex Chats And Online Bingo Have In Common?

For years, we've heard stories about how guys playing various online multiplayer games often pretend to be female. In many cases, it's a gaming strategy -- using the theory that male players treat female players differently, and it gives the fake female players an advantage. However, when it comes to online bingo, it seems the excuse is a bit different. For male online bingo players, it's about avoiding embarrassment. Over the last few years, there's finally been a recognition that the video game market isn't just first person shooters played by young men. Instead, people have begun to recognize that the so-called "casual gaming" market is huge -- even if it's often referred to as the "bored housewife" market. However, that connotation has men playing under female names, so as to avoid questions about why they're playing "a girly game" like bingo.

I play bingo at times and with a name like mine, its pretty apparent I'm male, but what is there to be ashamed off? If anybody cares what people think of them no matter what they are playing, thats pretty pathetic.

I am a female, and whenever I game, I usually use a male name (my favorite being Derek Crow) so as not to attract the prepubescent males trying to "cyber" with me. It really worked well for me when I was a preteen myself, I could play Starcraft without getting harassed with messages. It's a good idea, really is.

Playing games pretending to be a girl could be someone trying to get in touch with their feminine side. I mean girl names and playing games that are considered to be for girls could easily be a way to get in touch with the feminine side.

My Motives
The only reason I use a female character for Guild Wars (Yes, I'm a perfectly straight 17 year-old male.) is because of a basic job class descrimination. The character I made is an Elementalist, a class usually associated with female characters. Granted, it is sexist to choose the gender of your character based on the pre-concieved idea of what jobs are reserved for what gender. However, it also presents the same scenario as described in the article above; MMORPG players who appear to be female will be treated differently by other players. Many male players will pass up the better items for a female player. Of course, when asked, I make it clear that there is a man behind the keyboard. ;P

It depends on perspective
If its a First person view, I play as my own sex (male).
But if I have to stare at the character for hours and hours of gameplay, I would MUCH rather look at a skinny little hotty things body than some strapping male.
I'm just not gay enough to want to play a guy.

I play online bingo @ bingodiner.com all the time. Yes, I pretend I am a woman (can't tell you my screen name - don't want my girls to find out). It's not just to avoid embarrassment. Some of the ladies in there are beyond bored. I've heard stories about webcam sex and stuff that would phreak you out. You should spent some time in the chat rooms at bingodiner.com it gets interesting...

I am a real woman who plays WoW and I love the attention and flirtiness of male players.. I often get pretty flirty and bold back. But.. I wish I could figure out a way to tell who is really an adult and who is not! Since I can't tell, I never cross the line. I will say that most of the other female characters I've met in the game are actually males in real life. All of them reveal it to me though and act very male. I don't understand it.
