More Cities Set Up Wireless Networks

The NY Times is reporting on the trend of more and more cities to offer free Wi-Fi networks covering their downtown areas. They see it as a form of urban renewal. It's a way to attract businesses and business people to make use of their down town areas. It makes so much sense, I'm surprised that more cities haven't already jumped on the bandwagon. Think of it this way: it costs the towns a few thousand a year, but guarantees that many people (think of just the "working lunch" crowd) will frequent their downtown areas. I wonder how all of the commercial hotspot providers will survive.
