How Many Ways Can We Pump Up WiFi?

Okay, this post isn’t so much about the meat of this article saying that Ofcom is looking to figure out how to regulate UWB (even though no one has quite agreed on what UWB is going to be), but the fact that they call UWB “souped-up” WiFi. This, after lots of reporters have been calling WiMax “WiFi on steroids.” Neither is a particularly accurate description of the technologies they’re discussing, but it seems that our cultural view of wireless now is all starting from a baseline of WiFi — which might not be a good thing. WiFi is useful, but when we automatically compare everything to it, then we run into problems in understanding how new technologies should actually be used.
