Given this story and the Ellen DeGeneres story I'm starting to think that 'intellectual property owners' tend to see the world through glassed tinted by their own 'intellectual property.' That everywhere they look they only see the world as it relates to (and copies) their IP, and they are unable to see the IP of belonging to anyone else.
I've seen a big blue self serve DVD rental box from Blockbuster at a gas station. Has anyone else seen this? I wonder if they are under the same pressure from the studios.
Once you interact, share, socialized with content you don't want to go back to doing it 'the old way'. Just like once I got a Tivo I don't want to watch any video I can't pause, FF, RW, skip comm.
Even if we set aside the 1st Amendment issues (and that is a big IF), The rating boards compete (if even indirectly) with one another to build a better 'product.'
To collapses this into a single systems would remove incentives to compete for parents' dollars spent on their children's entertainment.
If the Prof didn't feel he had this 'copyright protection', wouldn't he have the incentive to create new assignments every year? Is this promoting progress?
Am I the only one who thinks that in the real world today that our employers expects/demands that I 'google' to find the answer to save time and not 'reinvent the wheel'. Maybe only internally to avoid legal IP issues.
I was going to add a lyric widget (based on lyricwiki) to my wife's blog where she talks (i.e. promotes) songs. Right now we fear posting lyrics because of this behavior.
It is very odd to talk about songs, but not mention their lyrics.
I'm going the agree that the Mark Twain quote was satire, and go one step further and say Mike inclusion of the quote as straight fact was also satire. Mike is a smart guy and is in on the joke.

'Own' and 'hold' are something you can do with a physical item. No one 'owns' a trademark. These terms imply you have some sort of right to them and what happens with them.
They are however 'responsible' for a trademark. They are responsible to prevent or correct any consumer confusion only IF there is any. If there is not consumer confusion then there is no action they need to take nor should they.
-Trademarks they are a responsibility not a right.
It makes since to have a 'buy American' requirement when you KNOW that the project will have no economic stimulus effect after it is bought/built. If this is the case then the 'project' is really just a gift to the provider, and that gift might as well stay in America if your ultimate goal is to stimulate the American Economy.
Aggregate? (as johnjac)
Not really sure if this is technically Aggregation, but the idea is still valid. Give the viewers what they want.

Looking on Amazon, this looks like a plastic toy basically. Had they called this a toy and not a lamp they may have gotten away with it.

Deficit (as johnjac)
Why don't more people draw a line from the US deficit problem (due mainly to rising health care cost) and pharma and other health related patents?

This is all said tongue in cheek, of course.

Correction, that is a Rumsfeld quote (as TbaBin)
As you know, you go to war with the Army you have. They're not the Army you might want or wish to have at a later time.

On another note,I would think Google and News Corp would help chip in the cost of the bandwidth. Good PR if you ask me.
