i was going to post this exact same thing. Goldeneye was the first big multiplayer split screen game that i could think of. But im pretty sure that there were a few that were before it.
Its actually refreshing to see a media/news company exec get where things are heading. The sad part is 99% of them act like the world owes them something. Reminds me of a cartoon i saw once where there was a guy yelling at an incoming tsunami, daring it to move him. Walled gardens make about as much sense.
