Sprint First To Market With Faster EV-DO Upgrade

from the zoooom dept

Sprint has turned on its EV-DO Rev. A network in San Diego, and says it will light up 20 more markets by the end of the year. The company has made good on its August announcement that it was accelerating its Rev. A rollout, and Sprint is quietly asserting itself as the US’ mobile broadband leader. Its Rev. A network is now the fastest in the country (with 700-850 kbps down and significantly, 300-400 kbps uplink), it’s beaten rival Verizon to market, and perhaps most importantly, it’s not stupidly restricting customers’ use of its data network like some other operators who market their services as “unlimited” when they are anything but. Also buried in the Sprint announcement was the news that it’s rolling out its first USB EV-DO modem in November, a move which could help it grab a new chunk of users. Now, if only operators would break the 80/60 pricing rule

Re: sprint

Keep in mkind VZW and Sprint both use Lucent (and Nortel for VZW) The technology is all the same and at the end of the day the company who is executing on the plan is better bet. VZW is already deploying Rev A in one market. They will smartly work out the kinks before subjecting customers to it if my guess is right.

PS What devices actually exist that use Rev A? The answer will surprise you. No worries!

“What devices actually exist that use Rev A?”

How many would you like for Sprint?

Sprints,
Novatel S720
Pantech PX-500
AirCard 595

Linksys Wireless-G Mobile Broadband Router WRT54G3G-ST so you can slap one of those cards above into it.

They even have a CrackBerry with build in EVDO rev A.

Verizon’s one card so far,
Novatel V640

Re: Pantech PX-500 Compatible with WRT54G3G-ST ???

I am having the same problem and after talking with Sprint Technical Support I was told that the PX-500 card is not compatible with the WRT54G3G-ST router-even though the Sprint salesperson told me it was when I ordered the router from them. Their website also shows the PX-500 as being compatible with this routher. I was told to switch to the Novatel or Sierra card.

I am having the same problem with the PX-500 and Linksys Wireless G router. My story is identical, sales said it would would work. Now I need to figure out how to order another card and not interrupt my current service. You would thing that Sprint would have there act together…and they need to update the web site and remove the PX-500. Very frustrating.

extremely frustrating. however i have read that the top global router is compatible with this card. if anyone has any experience with this router please post…

Re: Pantech px500 compatible with Vista?

Here’s a solution: http://www.evdoforums.com/thread5402.html

Posted: Sat Apr 07, 2007 6:08 pm Post subject: Pantech PX-500 Vista update

——————————————————————————–

Like many of us I bought my SPrint Mobile Broadband card PX 500 before Vista.

When I switched to Vista the downloadable software from Sprint would not work. Advanced Sprint Tech Support ( 866-818-1944 ) sent me a zip file which is a temporary workaround (using Vista’s “Connect to” dialup). Pantech Drivers.zip (containing Pantech_px500_v3.02.021.msi). It works fine but does not have the visual features (including speed, whether or not you are in a REv A area, etc.)

I phoned Sprint Tech support today and the person told me there was still no update for Vista, but that it might be available within the month, since they had already updated the other drivers and only the PX500 was left.

So give Sprint 30 days and let’s see if they have their Vista solution for PX500.

I meant to reply to your post but replied to another.

You don’t have to buy another card. You will need to phone Sprint Advanced tech support to get a temporary workaround zip file that will let it work with Vista and your card. Here’s a copy and paste of a comment I left on another forum:

In the meantime contact sprint to get their current workaround as I indicate above…..

Re: Pantech px500 compatible with Vista?

I bought the px 500 because I went landlineless(?). Was told that the dlink dir 450 would work well. Spent 7 hours on the phone before tech support said it was a bad router. The card works great in my vista laptop and in my son’s xp. We would just like a router that would work without me having to do router surgery??? Average speed was 160kbps, up to 224kpbs.
